After successfully taking on Tony Kushner’s play Angels in America, choreographer Philippe Saire tackles Dennis Kelly’s Orphans, which deals with issues of societal division, racism and family ties. In this electrically-paced play, which oscillates between psychological thriller, tragedy and black comedy, the author explores the theme of violence in the contemporary urban world. The judgement of the characters is ever-changing, subtle and unsettling. Victim? Accomplice? Guilty? Our certainties are shattered and raise the dizzying question: how far are we willing to go to protect our loved ones? Orphans does not offer a ready-made answer, but rather refers us to our internal capacity to face the intolerable.
Premiere: September 2021 – Arsenic, Lausanne. Sound Design: Jérémy Conne. Direction: Philippe Saire. Based on the play Orphans by Dennis Kelly.
